Who I am
This blog is run by Merry Quinn (a pseudonym), based in the Czech Republic. For any privacy questions, email (Spam Protection, please wait 5 seconds...).
Analytics
I use Umami, a privacy-focused, open-source analytics tool, to see how many people visit the site and which pages they read. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't track you across other sites, and doesn't build profiles of individual visitors.
Umami briefly uses your IP address and browser details to create an anonymous visitor identifier, but the IP address itself isn't stored. What gets recorded is the page viewed, referring site, browser, operating system, device type, screen size, and country.
My Umami instance is hosted by PikaPods, a managed hosting service, in an EU data centre. PikaPods stores the data on my behalf and doesn't use it for its own purposes. I don't share analytics data with anyone else.
I don't use any other analytics, advertising, or tracking tools.
Cookies and browser storage
The website software (Grav) sets a single cookie containing a random session identifier. It's used by the site itself, holds no personal information, and isn't used to track you.
The site also stores your light/dark theme preference in your browser's local storage, so it can remember your choice. This stays on your device and isn't sent to me or anyone else.
Apart from these, the site doesn't use cookies or similar technologies.
Hosting and server logs
This site runs on a virtual server from DigitalOcean in their Frankfurt, Germany data centre, using the Apache web server. Apache keeps standard technical logs (IP address, timestamp, requested page, referring site, browser details) for security and troubleshooting. These logs are automatically deleted after 14 days.
Why I collect this
I collect anonymous statistics to understand which content is useful, and keep server logs to keep the site secure and working. My legal basis under the GDPR is legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)). The data is minimal and the impact on your privacy is low.
Your rights
You can ask me to access, correct or delete any personal data I hold about you, or object to how I use it.
The analytics data is anonymous, so I can't tell which visits were yours and can't look it up or delete it individually. Server logs do contain IP addresses, so if you tell me yours, I can check the logs and delete matching entries. You can also complain to the Czech data protection authority, the Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů (uoou.gov.cz).
